Spam Allstars - http://www.myspace.com/spamallstars
DJ Le Spam & Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show -- they know something very special is going on. Spam Allstars were formed by Andrew Yeomanson, a/k/a DJ Le Spam, who was raised in Toronto, Bogota and London, and has called Miami home since 1993. He got his start by playing guitar in Haitian band Lavalas, and recording and touring with Miami based artist Nil Lara. Along the way he added to his vinyl collection, and when off the road he would DJ locally. These DJ gigs evolved into collaborations with live musicians, performing on an internet radio show, recording in his home studio, and the first of many residencies combining his samplers & DJ skills with a live band.
The Hip Abduction - http://www.myspace.com/thehipabduction
Singer/songwriter David New keeps the theme moving from his years spent traveling the Caribbean and South America. Depending on the venue, up to 8 members can be on stage during a Hip Abduction event, each following a world, rock, soul, and reggae theme. Heavy emphasis is placed on the dub-reggae-inspired bass lines of Chris Powers and the unique drumming technique of Pat Hernly who uses a multi-percussion setup including congas, timbales, hand kick, tabla, dholak, and cajon. Trumpeter Kevin Clark and saxophonist Matt Gawlik lay down jazz/funk style instrumental melodies. Tight drumming coupled with a strong melodic groove structure is at the core of each tune. THA draws on the stories of acoustic driven blues, overlays jazz/funk style instrumental melodies, and crafts high-energy festival style free improvisation. As a whole, The Hip Abduction members have played and resided in the Caribbean, Micronesia, Ecuador, India, NYC, DC, and various locations along east coast.
Green Sunshine - http://www.myspace.com/herbandlegends
Performing a mix of funk, jam, hip hop and jazz, the collective consists of three MCs (Reason, Rhyme and Chaos), a vocalist (Motown Tea), a guitarist (Justin Boza), a bassist (Curtis Haze), a drummer (Jason Stander), a DJ (Sly Boogie) and a guy who plays trumpet, keys and harmonica (Johnny Nichol). The end result is something like G. Love and Special Sauce, Arrested Development and Jurassic 5 all covering the Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique. Their music radiates positive vibes, and is deeply funky and extremely fun-loving (thanks, no doubt, to "green"-loving songs like Puff Puff Pass and THC), making the band a house-party favorite around Tampa Bay.
